Do I Need to Call the Police After a Car Accident?
Maybe! In Colorado, the law requires you to file an accident report whenever there is a car crash, not matter how minor the accident was. Colorado law also requires you to call the police if (1) someone is injured, (2) the accident was a hit and run, (3) public property was damaged, or (4) someone was under the influence.
As a general rule, calling the police is usually the best option to protect yourself. First, the police officer may be able to determine who is at fault and make any questions about liability easier to answer. Second, if you end up being injured, but didn’t call the police after the accident, the insurance company will likely argue that your accident must not have been that bad or you would have called the police. Long story short, always call the police if one of the 4 things I mentioned are present, but we recommend calling the police regardless. Then call CGH at 303-209-9395. Life happens. We can help.
